900SAAB.com:  Bumper Strip Removal

With exception of the '98 and Talladega models, all SAAB 900's came with a chrome strip on both the front and rear bumpers.

While a matter of taste, this chrome strip tends to age poorly and in my opinion, dates the overall appearance of the vehicle.  Because of this, I chose to remove my bumper strips.  The strips are held in place, on each edge of the bumper, with a spring mechanism.  To remove, remove the torx screw securing the fender liner to the bumper and gently pull the edge of the bumper outward.  Reach in and disconnect the spring.  With the spring gone, the strip merely pulls out.  When done, you'll be left with this:

You can choose to leave the car in this condition.  I lived with it like this for about 3 months and then decided that the lack of the strip made the bumper look unfinished.  The Talladega and '98 models have a black strip which can be purchased and installed, however, it'll cost around $200 to do.  I chose to use universal fender trim from JC Whitney.  It set me back about $20, shipped, for enough to do both front and rear bumpers.  This is self-adhesive; cut to length, clean the bumper, peel and stick.  Here's the bumper with the channels filled with universal trim:
